McDonald's has removed a holiday advert produced via AI following facing considerable criticism on social media.
The brief spot was produced with the help of AI video tools and was initially published on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.
Shortly after its release, viewers on social media denounced the implementation of AI in the film. Several called it "disturbing" and "poorly edited".
"This experience is an key learning as we examine the proper use of generative technology," said a representative from the company.
The advert was developed for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It showed various scenarios that can go wrong over the holidays, with the theme "the worst time of the year".
Adverts that incorporate AI tools have emerged as a rising trend among major brands, especially for the holiday period.
After the video's removal, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.
She stated, the development took "over a month and a half" and involved generating "numerous versions" which were then edited in post-production "in the same way we would on any standard production".
"This was not an experiment," she commented. "We consider it a finished piece."
While the McDonald's ad was mostly criticized, the sentiment for other AI-generated holiday ads has been divisive.
For instance, a consecutive AI-generated Christmas spot from another major brand according to analysis garnered a significant "favorable response" from viewers.
However, various brands have likewise faced scrutiny for using the technique in their campaigns. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that critics called "cheap" and "uncanny".
The situation highlights the continuing conversation within the advertising and creative industries about the balance between technological innovation and audience reception.
