Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
