We present a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical body horror, but inside Together lies a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.
Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The plot starts when the couple move from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.
A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.
Both characters face the sort of issues that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.
While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.
Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
