Around 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Cars, walls and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.

Officers say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.

The liquid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Officers then found multiple other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.

Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement say early analysis show the liquid was probably human blood.

"At present there remains no lead as to its source; investigators are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the event," they commented.

Municipal representatives stated they were working "to solve the case" and have requested to the residents for information.

A high-ranking official stated the incident left him speechless and needed to be resolved rapidly.

"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
